Our Activities
Everything KIASWA does to advance the rights, health, and dignity of trans and female sex workers in Kiambu County.
01
CLM Training
Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) training conducted by KIASWA to train sex workers on overseeing and monitoring medical services delivered to them. CLM empowers community members to collect data, identify gaps in service delivery, and hold healthcare providers accountable. Trained monitors regularly visit health facilities and report findings to KIASWA and partner organizations.
02
Mental Health Retreat
Mental health retreat programs organized for KIASWA staff and beneficiaries who work closely with the organization. These programs focus on psychosocial wellbeing, resilience-building, and trauma processing. Participants engage in structured peer support sessions and wellness activities designed to address the unique mental health challenges faced by those working with key populations.
03
Continuous Medical Education
Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions held at partner hospitals including Juja Hospital and Githiga Hospital, with Githiga sessions supported by Red Cross and BHESP. These sessions bring together doctors, nurses, and clinical officers to improve knowledge of key population health needs, HIV/AIDS service delivery, and the 90-90-90 cascade — ensuring medical professionals provide non-judgmental, rights-based care.
04
Police & Law Enforcement Sensitization
Workshops targeting police officers and county law enforcement on Human Rights as they pertain to sex workers. Led by Advocate and Founder Melba Katindi, these sessions educate officers on the legal rights of sex workers, the harm caused by arbitrary arrests, and the importance of law enforcement cooperation in the HIV response — reducing harassment and creating a safer environment.
05
County Health Management Sensitization
Consultative meetings and workshops with the county health management team on key population services and the 90-90-90 HIV cascade. KIASWA engages county health officials to ensure key populations are included in county health plans, budgets, and service delivery frameworks — facilitating policy dialogue and advocating for dedicated resources.
06
Service Charter
KIASWA developed and launched a Service Charter at its main offices in Kiambu County. The Charter clearly outlines the rights of service users, the standards of care they can expect, and the obligations of the secretariat. Both visitors and staff are guided by the Charter in all service interactions, promoting accountability, dignity, and a rights-based approach.
07
Community Feeding Program
During the COVID-19 pandemic, KIASWA ran a community feeding programme for sex workers in Kiambu County, providing food relief to the most vulnerable. As lockdowns eliminated income for sex workers, KIASWA mobilized resources to distribute food parcels — reaching hundreds of beneficiaries and demonstrating KIASWA's commitment to holistic community support beyond biomedical services.
